Question about meiosis – someone explain it like I’m 12 pls
Hey guys, can anyone tell me super simply what the phases of meiosis actually do? I know it makes sperm and eggs but all the prophase-metaphase stuff confuses me a lot. Why two divisions? What’s the point of crossing over? Please use easy words, thank you!

Check this page, it explains the phases of meiosis very clearly. Basically meiosis turns one normal body cell into four special sex cells with half the DNA. First division (Meiosis I) separates the mom and dad chromosome pairs — this is where you get genetic shuffling because of crossing over (they swap pieces) and random lining up. That already makes every gamete unique. Second division (Meiosis II) just splits the copied DNA so each final cell gets only one copy of each chromosome. That’s why we have 23 chromosomes in gametes instead of 46. Without meiosis babies would have too many chromosomes and it would be a mess. The whole process creates variety which helps species survive and evolve.
